Last month, our team had an amazing opportunity to participate in a Classic Car Show and community event up in Ozark, Missouri called “Cruisin’ the Square.” We took our 2019 Shelby Mustang and headed north to an idyllic hidden gem of a town up in the Ozark mountains. The food was excellent, the people- warm and inviting, and the cars…well, the cars were quintessentially cool!
We gave our intern, Liz, the herculean feat of choosing two out of the almost 250 classic cars present to feature in our new “Cool Car Stories” series. We walked the square no fewer than five times looking for the right car to feature, but in the end, we came back to the car she fell in love with at first sight- a beautifully restored, mint green, 1959 Ford Thunderbird owned by father/daughter duo Donnie and Dainey Danielson.
Here at Lap Around America, we believe that all cool cars have cool stories, and this beauty has a great one.
Donnie Danielson bought a terribly dilapidated 1959 T-Bird back in 2006 as a project. His daughter, Dainey, just a toddler at the time, would spend evenings in the garage with her dad while he worked restoring this classic car to its former glory.
As Dainey got older, she began to take more of an interest in the project, and when she was eleven, started actively participating in the restoration. Dainey says the time she spends with her dad tinkering have been some of her favorite moments, but she loves “getting to show off the finished project.” She and her dad travel regularly to car shows with the T-Bird, that our intern affectionately named “Ethel,” and enjoy taking weekend cruises in the convertible. They love stopping off at Culver’s on their drives for pot roast and custard, and truly enjoy the time they get to spend on the road together.
Now that Dainey has her license, She and her dad have picked a new classic car to restore, a 1978 Ford Mustang. We can’t wait to see what they do with it!
Special thanks to Donnie and Dainey for sharing their story with us, our team loved meeting them and it inspired our intern Liz to begin looking into restoring a car for herself!
